Puskar Bahadur Gurung is a veteran actor, theatre director, cultural activist, and artistic leader with over four decades of contribution to Nepali theatre, film, and cultural preservation. Actively engaged in the field for more than 45 years, he is widely recognized for his pioneering role in both proscenium and community theatre, as well as his lifelong commitment to nurturing indigenous and contemporary theatre practices across Nepal.
Born in Sailung, Dolakha, Mr. Gurung began his theatre journey at a young age and has since traveled to more than 60 districts of Nepal, working closely with local communities. Through his work, he has inspired and guided countless young artists to form theatre groups and sustain theatrical movements within indigenous communities across all five development regions of the country. His artistic practice reflects a deep concern for cultural identity, social change, and the preservation of Nepal’s living cultural heritage.
In response to the challenges posed by globalization, Mr. Gurung initiated the long-term campaign “Theatre for Change,” focusing on youth and school communities to safeguard both tangible and intangible cultural heritage through performance, training, and creative engagement. His leadership has been instrumental in organizing major national and international theatre festivals, including the Buddha Theatre Festival, National Theatre Festivals in Pokhara and Dolakha, and the NIB (Nepal–India–Bangladesh) Theatre Festival.
Mr. Gurung has performed in numerous acclaimed stage productions in Nepal and abroad, representing Nepali theatre internationally in countries such as Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, South Korea, and China. Alongside theatre, he has built a strong presence in Nepali cinema, appearing in many successful and award-winning feature films, including the Kabaddi series, Jaari, Purano Dunga, and Chhakka Panja 4.
He currently serves as the President, Artistic Director, and Executive Director of DABALI Theatre and Sailung Production, and has previously served as President of the Nepal Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI/UNESCO). He is also a Council Member of the Nepal Academy of Music and Drama. A founder member of several cultural institutions, Mr. Gurung has received multiple national honors, including the D Cine Award for Best Character Actor.
Through his vision, leadership, and artistic excellence, Puskar Bahadur Gurung continues to shape Nepal’s cultural landscape—bridging tradition and modernity, nurturing new generations of artists, and ensuring that theatre remains a powerful voice for identity, dialogue, and change.
पुष्कर बहादुर गुरुङ नेपाली रंगमञ्च, चलचित्र तथा सांस्कृतिक संरक्षण क्षेत्रमा चार दशकभन्दा बढी समयदेखि निरन्तर सक्रिय एक वरिष्ठ अभिनेता, रंगकर्मी, नाट्य निर्देशक, सांस्कृतिक अभियन्ता तथा कलात्मक नेतृत्वकर्ता हुन्। ४५ वर्षभन्दा बढी समयदेखि यस क्षेत्रमा संलग्न रहँदै आएका गुरुङ प्रोसिनियम रंगमञ्च तथा समुदायमा आधारित नाटक दुवै क्षेत्रमा अग्रणी भूमिका निर्वाह गर्ने व्यक्तित्वका रूपमा परिचित छन्।
दोलखाको सैलुङमा जन्मिएका गुरुङले सानै उमेरदेखि रंगमञ्च यात्रा सुरु गरेका हुन्। उनले नेपालका ६० भन्दा बढी जिल्लामा स्थानीय समुदायसँग नजिक रहेर काम गरेका छन्। उनको मार्गदर्शन र प्रेरणाबाट थुप्रै युवा कलाकारहरू रंगसमूह गठन गर्न तथा आदिवासी समुदायभित्र रंगमञ्चीय आन्दोलनलाई निरन्तरता दिन सक्षम भएका छन्।
उनले “थिएटर फर चेन्ज” (Theatre for Change) नामक दीर्घकालीन अभियानमार्फत मूर्त तथा अमूर्त सांस्कृतिक सम्पदाको संरक्षणमा योगदान पुर्याएका छन्। गुरुङले जापान, अष्ट्रेलिया, बेलायत, फ्रान्स, स्पेन, दक्षिण कोरिया र चीनलगायतका देशहरूमा नेपाली रंगमञ्चको प्रतिनिधित्व गरेका छन्। रंगमञ्चसँगै उनले नेपाली चलचित्र क्षेत्रमा पनि सशक्त उपस्थिति बनाएका छन्। कबड्डी श्रृंखला, जारि, पुरानो डुंगा, र छक्का पञ्जा ४ लगायत थुप्रै सफल चलचित्रहरूमा उनको उल्लेखनीय अभिनय रहेको छ।
हाल उनी डबली थिएटर तथा सैलुङ प्रोडक्सनका अध्यक्ष, कलात्मक निर्देशक तथा कार्यकारी निर्देशकको रूपमा कार्यरत छन्। उनले अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय थिएटर इन्स्टिच्युट (ITI/UNESCO) अन्तर्गत नेपाल केन्द्रको अध्यक्षका रूपमा पनि सेवा गरिसकेका छन्। उनले रंगमञ्च तथा चलचित्र क्षेत्रमा पुर्याएको योगदानका लागि डि सिने अवार्ड (उत्कृष्ट चरित्र अभिनेता) सहित थुप्रै राष्ट्रिय सम्मानहरू प्राप्त गरेका छन्।
